City Manager John Deardoff says Fun Valley is attracting fewer tournaments and is losing money because of competition from newer facilities in other communities.
The Hutchinson News reports the city spends about $400,000 annually to operate the venue. City leaders are trying to decide whether to spend thousands of dollars to improve the site, or maintain its fields only for local recreational leagues.
Fun Valley opened as a private venture in 1980, but the city bought it in 1983 and made improvements when the owners went bankrupt. It has a seating capacity of about 5,000 spread around several fields.
Softball teams at Hutchinson Community College and Hutchinson High School use the fields for their games.
