4331 Old Highway 13 in southeast Geary County was the site of fire Tuesday that fully engulfed a large abandoned 25 x 50 foot size shed. The blaze also spread to the surrounding grass, but there were no injuries reported.
According to Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges Geary County Rural Fire and Alta Vista Fire responded to the scene. This is the second fire to a building on the property in the past year. The property is abandoned and has no electrical or propane services to it.
On Wednesday authorities including an investigator from the Geary County Fire Department, Curt Janke, one from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and two from the Geary County Sheriff’s Office returned to the scene. Janke reported the cause of the fire is undetermined for now, unless more information is obtained. “The big thing we cannot rule out is that there was a human influence on it. We’re not calling it suspicious, it’s undetermined.” Janke stated the shed is completely gone. There were no injuries.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, the State Fire Marshal’s office or Crime Stoppers.
Another fire involving an abandoned two-story farm house occurred at the same rural site in 2016.
