The 2025 Fall Football Season begins on Friday night, and the Junction City Blue Jays will begin their season at home at Blue Jay Stadium. 

Junction City will host the Haysville-Campus Colts, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. 

The Blue Jays are led by head coach Randall Zimmerman, who is in his 32nd year at the head of the Junction City Program. This is year 41 overall for Zimmerman coaching high school football. “I am very much looking forward to getting going for year 32 with the Blue Jays,” Zimmerman said. 

Junction City once again faces a challenging schedule this season, with key matchups against Lawrence, Wichita Northwest, Hays, Manhattan, and Washburn Rural all on the horizon. “We know we have an incredibly tough schedule,” Zimmerman said. “With that said, we really didn’t talk about that; we talked about us and our team. We need to get better with every snap, every practice, and take those things into our games.” 

Junction City went 5-5 last season and lost in the second round to 6A powerhouse Derby. Despite last year being a tough year for the Blue Jays, several players gained valuable experience. Key returners include senior quarterback Conrad Gomez, senior linebacker and running back Jamarcus Tyson, and senior wide receiver Lovell Autry. On the offensive line, seniors Avery Florence and Blake Proietti will help lead the way up front. Defensively, senior Jackson Hollie will lead the defensive line, along with juniors Noah Aguon and Trevon Briley. Other key pieces on the defensive side of the ball include linebacker Khaliel Walker and defensive back Kingston Timms. 

The Blue Jays began last season beating Campus 55-0 down in Haysville. Junction City will attempt to get off to a quick start again this season, but this time on its home field. 

When talking about the joy of Friday Night Lights, Coach Zimmerman had this to say. “Come out and enjoy these Friday evenings. We’ve got the football game going on, but there are a lot of things happening. Cheerleaders are cheering, the band will be out here, come on out and see all the positive energy from our kids.”

Kelly Cook, Director of Member Relations for the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce, said it was a great night. A 50/50 raffle was popular. "We'll have a drawing and we'll hand it ( funds ) out on Monday."

Cook noted that the annual event gets businesses out front and center. "You get to see everybody. We've got first time vendors that are here, and they keep telling me how much fun they're having visiting with other businesses and the community."

There was a strong turnout for the Junction City Expo

Governor Laura Kelly and Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed have announced that 27 local and off-system bridge projects across Kansas will receive a combined total of $40.5 million in state and federal funding as part of two local bridge improvement programs.

Combined with matching funds from the awarded cities and counties, the total project value is over $46.5 million. By reshaping the local bridge programs, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) more than doubled its annual funding as part of the existing Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE).

KDOT will award about $20 million through the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program (KLBIP) in Fiscal Year 2026. The funds will go to 11 bridge replacement projects.&nbsp;KDOT will award $20.5 million through the Off-System Bridge program (OSB) in Fiscal Year 2027 to fund 16 projects across the state. The OSB program was established to comply with federal requirements to use a specific portion of federal funds for bridges not on the federal-aid system.

There is one off-system bridge program in Geary County and one in Riley County.&nbsp;

Lasita Road over Timber Creek 1.0 mile north, 6.0 miles west of city of Riley, Local Match, $66,614, Maximum Funds Awarded, $600,000.

McNeal Road over East Branch Humboldt Creek 5.0 miles south and 12.0 miles east of Junction City, Local Match $104,834, Maximum Funds Awarded $800,000.

Just before 11a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report of burglary in the 1200 block of Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 73-year-old man reported an unknown suspect entered his building and stole copper. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,550.

--More weed eating work is needed in the parks.That job is contracted out.

--The Geary County Historical Society has requested $10,000 from the city for next year. The request comes in lieu of expected cuts in county funding. City staff appears willing to help but final action has not yet occurred. There was also a suggestion to check with the CVB.

On Tuesday, the USD 475 Board of Education approved the following positions due to enrollment numbers increasing this school year, which includes the following positions at Morris Hill Elementary: a new receptionist position, a new adaptive communication and social skills - ACSS teacher position, a new fourth grade teacher position and a new kindergarten teacher position. Other positions approved included a fifth grade teacher position at Seitz Elementary and a new adaptive communication and social skills - ACSS teacher position at Junction City High School.

Board Approves New Positions

&nbsp;Geary County Clerk of the District Court Katrina Adams has notified the public that the phone service at the Geary County Courthouse may be out Thursday&nbsp; until 3pm while their service provider performs system maintenance.

The possibility of closing Milford and Grandview Elementary Schools plus the Heim, Hauge and existing Early Childhood facility was a discussion topic for the Board of Education Monday evening.

No final decisions have been made. In fact there is a lengthy process that would have to be followed.

Per pupil expenditures are higher in Milford and Grandview Elementary than in other schools. Dr. Reginald Eggleston, Superintendent of Schools, said that the Board would normally have to approve a resolution stating that it is interested or willing to close a facility. "Then we would have to have hearings in order to give the general public an opportunity to come in and speak." After that the Board would then make a decision.

Eggleston also noted that the Board could consider for example, that the Heim and Hauge buildings are being vacated for a new facility.&nbsp;

Advantages for closing Milford and Grandview would include a reduction in overhead expense and for transferring staff to fill vacancies within the district as 475 transitions into another school year. The closures could also possibly help the district become eligible for heavy impact aid in the future, which could help meet facility needs.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club is having a fundraiser event at the American Legion at Fourth and Franklin Streets on September 13 from 7:00 AM-10:00 AM.Tickets will be available only at the door at a cost of $10.00 each.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for an alleged attack on law enforcement officers.

Just before 4p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for two counts of battery of a law enforcement officer and attempted battery on a law enforcement officer in the 1800 block of College Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;On Monday, a 38-year-old man kicked an officer while being restrained on and then battered a corrections officer and attempted to batter another on September 2. 

Dylan Peterson, 38, of Manhattan, was arrested on September 2, at approximately 4:14 p.m., on requested charges of battery of a law enforcement officer (university/campus police), battery of a law enforcement officer (county or city officer) and attempted battery on a law enforcement officer. Peterson is being held on a$16,000 bond, according to the RCPD.

A 74-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect stole a check and altered it to redirect the payment. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,488.62.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) is releasing its Labor Day Weekend Holiday Activity Report. The reporting period for the holiday ran from 6:00 pm on Friday, August 29 to 11:59 pm on Monday, September 1.

KHP worked one fatal DUI related crash involving two DUI related fatalities over the holiday.

The idea first suggested by Board member Jason Butler has called for a $6,000 salary with annual increases indexed to 50% of the average annual increases received by teachers.

--In other business the Board adopted the 2025-26 school district budget and local option budget.

--After intense discussion Board members tabled a motion to stop paying $62,500 a month for the gov.link contract and instead have an employee on the staff handle the job. GovLink manages the District's intergovernmental support agreement with Fort Riley. It involves administrative support for construction for the Post
